Deputy Sheriff Brandy Lyn Winfield, aged 29, was tragically shot and killed on October 14, 2004, while on duty with the Marion County Sheriff's Department in Ohio. He was dispatched to check on a disabled vehicle on State Route 423 and encountered two men walking along the road. After making contact with them, no further communication was made with dispatchers. Shortly after, Deputy Winfield was found shot in his patrol car, which was upside down in a ravine.
He was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation led to a massive manhunt, and two suspects were apprehended later that week. One of the suspects was sentenced to 2 years probation for obstruction of justice, while the 20-year-old shooter was convicted of murder and sentenced to 40 years to life. He will be eligible for parole on October 4, 2047.
Deputy Winfield, a third-generation law enforcement officer, is survived by his wife and two children. His great-grandfather, father, and brother all served in law enforcement roles within the Marion area. In 2024, his son joined the Marion County Sheriff's Office as a deputy, continuing the family's legacy of service.
