James Burton III, a 26-year-old male, tragically lost his life on November 16, 2015, in Marion, Ohio. Burton, who was described as a "peacemaker" by his mother, Deborah Gadsden, had driven from Cleveland to Marion to help friends who needed a ride. His death occurred following a fight at Dino's Bar and Grill, also known as the Time-Out Lounge.
The altercation began when Burton, who had only been in the bar for a few minutes, exchanged words with Ronnie Farley Jr., 30, leading to a
physical confrontation. The fight escalated as patrons began using pool balls as weapons. Farley eventually drew a 9mm pistol and shot Burton twice in the torso, resulting in his death.
In the aftermath, Farley was indicted on one count of murder and faced a potential sentence of 15 years to life, with an additional three years for a firearm specification. However, Farley pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges, receiving the maximum 24-year sentence under Ohio's sentencing guidelines. Ortavious L. Hood, 19, was also indicted on multiple charges, including felonious assault and tampering with evidence, for his actions following the shooting.
The case drew significant attention, with Burton's family and friends advocating for justice and harsher penalties for those involved. Despite the legal proceedings, Burton's family continued to mourn the loss of their loved one, expressing regret over his decision to visit Marion that fateful night.
