Michael D. Birchfield, a 38-year-old man from Marion, OH, tragically died on March 10, 2021, from a gunshot wound to the torso. Birchfield was a resident at the address where the shooting occurred, and he was transported to Marion General Hospital by the Marion City Fire Department, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Following the incident, the Marion Police Department arrested 38-year-old Jeremy L. Criswell, who also lived at the same address.
Criswell was charged with involuntary manslaughter and weapons under disability. During his transport to the Multi-County Correctional Center, Criswell became unresponsive and was taken to Marion General Hospital, where he was later released and taken to the correctional center.
The Marion Police Chief, Jay McDonald, stated that the loss of life was preventable and attributed it to unsafe weapons handling. The investigation was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, and the Marion Fire Department. The case remains under investigation, and the police are seeking additional information from the community.
