Larry Randolph Cox, a 44-year-old male police officer of Caucasian ethnicity from Chillicothe, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on April 21, 2005. Cox, who served as a D.A.R.E. officer, was off-duty when he observed a robbery suspect fleeing from another officer. Despite being off-duty, Cox chose to join the pursuit. The suspect, a 34-year-old man, had stolen a car and robbed a gas station approximately an hour earlier.
The confrontation occurred in an alley between Chestnut Street and Church Street, near High Street. During the confrontation, the suspect shot and killed Officer Cox. The suspect was later arrested nine days after the incident for a parole violation in Pickaway County. Evidence connected him to the murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Officer Cox had served with the Chillicothe Police Department for 19 years and was well-loved in the community. His death had a profound impact on the city, leading to numerous memorials and tributes in his honor. Cox is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Chillicothe.
