Marvin Duane Brown, a 73-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was found shot to death inside his hunting cabin outside Powhatan Point, Ohio, on November 18, 2013. Marvin was a well-respected member of his community, having served as the mayor of Powhatan Point in 1984 and 1985, and was known for his involvement in local businesses and the American Legion.
The autopsy report revealed that Marvin had been shot once fatally in the back, and law enforcement officials suspected a Highpoint 9-mm handgun as the murder weapon, although the gun was never found.
The investigation into Marvin's murder initially faced numerous challenges, with no immediate suspects or evidence to narrow down the list of potential perpetrators. In March 2018, a breakthrough occurred when Steven Andrew Moore, who was serving jail time on unrelated drug trafficking charges, confessed to shooting Marvin Brown. During a four-hour interview with authorities, Moore admitted to the murder and implicated Marvin's stepdaughter, Meredith Broome , as the instigator behind the killing. Moore claimed he was paid $12,000 to carry out the murder. This confession led to Moore being charged with aggravated murder and aggravated burglary.
In February 2019, Steven Moore pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 30 years. He also received an additional 11 years for aggravated burglary, to be served concurrently. Moore's confession and subsequent sentencing brought some closure to Marvin Brown's family, although they continued to express the profound impact of Marvin's loss on their lives.
