Patrick L. Jones, a 47-year-old African American man from Columbus, Ohio, tragically died on January 3, 2014. He was a resident at a home for developmentally disabled individuals and had a history of confrontations with law enforcement. On the night of his death, police were called to the house after a caregiver reported that Jones had threatened her and locked himself in a bathroom.
When the police arrived, Jones confronted them with a knife, and Officer Solomon Seng shot him, resulting in his death.

Anthony Hartley, president and CEO of the Association for the Developmentally Disabled, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and mentioned that the association had been working closely with the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities to provide a care plan for Jones and the other residents. The police had been called to the house at least twice in the previous three months due to altercations involving Jones.
Despite the tragic circumstances, no arrests or suspects were named in connection with Jones's death. The case did not lead to any litigations or murder investigations, as it was deemed a justified use of force by the police. The community and the association continued to review and adjust care plans to prevent similar incidents in the future.
