On November 8, 2021, 21-year-old Abraha Ermias was fatally shot outside a Target store near Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. Ermias, who was of Ethiopian descent, entered the store around 11:28 a.m. and made a purchase at the Starbucks inside. After exiting the store, he was approached by an unidentified man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray or tan long pants, who shot him at close range.
The suspect fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Impala.
The Columbus Division of Police identified the incident as an isolated one, with no risk to the public. However, they have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting was gang-related. Detectives provided a description of the suspect as a Black male, aged between 18 and 30 years old, standing between 5-foot-6 to 6-foot-1 in height, and weighing between 165 to 220 pounds. Despite an ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Ermias' death.
Ermias' death marked the 175th homicide in Columbus for the year 2021, tying the previous record for the highest number of homicides in a single year. The Columbus Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with information to come forward.
