Shawn Dotson, a 46-year-old African American man from Akron, Ohio, tragically lost his life on June 7, 2014. Shawn was well-known in his community, having served in the U.S. Navy and later becoming self-employed. He was passionate about basketball and was an active member of his church, New Millennium Baptist Church.
On the day of his death, Shawn returned home with an unknown female companion.
Four men, Robert Jordan, Darryl Rue, Adrian Washington, and Dennis Miller, drove to Shawn's house with the intent to commit a burglary. Jordan and Rue broke into the home through a window, while Washington acted as a lookout and Miller served as the getaway driver. When Shawn and the female arrived home, they were confronted by Jordan and Rue. A struggle ensued, during which Jordan shot Shawn. The bullet also went through Rue's hand. The female companion managed to escape, but Shawn was fatally wounded.
The suspects initially tried to cover up their crime by lying to the police, claiming they had been robbed and shot at a different location. However, their story quickly unraveled, and they were arrested. Gunshot residue was found on Jordan, and DNA evidence placed Rue at the scene. All four men eventually pleaded guilty to their roles in Shawn's death. Robert Jordan was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for murder, while Darryl Rue received a 20-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter. Adrian Washington and Dennis Miller each received 20-year sentences for their involvement.
