Andrew Brady Davidson, a 33-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, tragically died on November 13, 2014, in Butler Township, Ohio. Davidson was involved in a fatal encounter with Butler Township police officers Sgt. Todd Stanley and Officer Amy Carter. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Panera Bread on Miller Lane, where Davidson was stopped by the police.
During the stop, Davidson refused to comply with officers' verbal commands, attempted to spray them with pepper spray, and threatened to kill the police. He exited his vehicle and advanced toward an officer with a knife in his hand, prompting the officer to shoot Davidson in self-defense. Davidson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was connected to a "be-on-the-lookout" report from Piqua police stemming from a stalking complaint. Davidson had been wanted in connection with a menacing by stalking complaint filed by a woman who worked at Nitto Denko Automotive Ohio Inc. Davidson had a history of menacing and harassment charges, including telephone harassment and menacing by stalking charges from Franklin County in 2006. He was also ordered to undergo intense mental health supervision and continue mental health treatment after pleading guilty to some charges.
Following the shooting, both officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave during investigations led by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The Montgomery County Grand Jury found no criminal intent on the officer who fired the fatal shot, and no true bill was returned. The officers were later cleared of any wrongdoing, and both returned to their duties.
The incident was one of several police-related shootings in the region, and it highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with individuals with mental health issues and a history of threatening behavior. The confrontation between Davidson and the police lasted less than five minutes, and the cruiser cam footage showed the officers' attempts to elicit compliance from Davidson.
