Nyle Mikale Proffit, a 25-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on December 6, 2014, in Forest Park, Ohio. Proffit was found dead outside the Uptown Lounge early that morning. According to police reports, he was caught in the crossfire of a fight that erupted in the nightclub's parking lot. The altercation involved more than 150 people, and Proffit was unfortunately shot twice by Demetrius Chaney, who claimed he acted in defense of his friend who was assaulted
during the fight.
Chaney, also 25 years old, was arrested on December 18, 2014, and later indicted on two counts of murder and two counts of felonious assault. He was held at the Hamilton County Justice Center awaiting trial. The case drew significant attention from the community, with Proffit's family and friends pleading for justice and urging witnesses to come forward. Despite the large number of witnesses present that night, police struggled to gather sufficient evidence and testimony to build a stronger case.
The investigation into Proffit's death highlighted the challenges law enforcement faces in communities where the "no snitch" culture prevails. Proffit's mother, Jonda Proffit, remained hopeful and leaned on community support to cope with her loss. She emphasized the impact her son had on those around him and the void his absence left in their lives.
In the aftermath of the shooting, there were efforts to raise awareness and funds for Proffit's family, including a gameday fundraiser organized by the community. The case against Chaney continued to unfold in the legal system, with the community closely following the developments and hoping for a resolution that would bring justice for Nyle Mikale Proffit.
