John E. Anderson II, a 31-year-old man from Columbus, OH, tragically lost his life on November 23, 2015. He was a stucco mason by profession and was known for his generosity and dedication to his family. Anderson was shot along with his wife, Christina Chaffin Anderson, 30, and their 7-year-old son, Landon E. Anderson, inside their home on South Terrace Avenue in the Hilltop neighborhood.
Their 12-year-old daughter, Makyleigh Anderson, survived the attack but was critically injured and taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital.
The suspect in the case was Barry Kirk, a 50-year-old neighbor who lived across the street from the Anderson family. According to police reports, Kirk shot the family members before fleeing the scene. When officers arrived, they found Kirk running from the home and shot him after he ignored commands to stop and reached for his waist. Kirk was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after. Investigators found a handgun next to Kirk's body.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and detectives worked tirelessly to gather evidence and conduct interviews to understand why Kirk committed the crime. Kirk had a history of minor offenses, including a charge of assault against his wife in 2004 and a threat charge in 2009. However, there was no indication that he had any significant conflicts with the Anderson family.
The Anderson family's tragic death left the community in shock, and neighbors came together to support the surviving family members and help them heal. A candlelight vigil was held for the Anderson family at the Hilltop Lutheran Church, and the community continued to offer support and condolences.
