Thomas Hirko, a 54-year-old white male from Perry, Ohio, died on February 4, 2016, after being shot by a sheriff's deputy. The incident occurred after Hirko's wife, Lorrie Osborne-Hirko, called 911 reporting that she had been stabbed multiple times by her husband. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Hirko holding what appeared to be a gun, which later turned out to be an airsoft-type pistol.
Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, Hirko refused and raised the gun toward the deputies, prompting one of them to fire four shots, hitting Hirko twice. Hirko was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital later that night.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the shooting, with assistance from an outside law enforcement organization. Sheriff Daniel Dunlap stated that the officers involved had more than 10 years of experience and believed no policies were violated during the incident. Hirko had a criminal record dating back to 1985, which included charges for driving under the influence, domestic violence, and disorderly conduct. In 2006, Hirko had barricaded himself in a home and threatened to kill himself following a troubled break-up from his previous marriage.
Hirko's family mentioned that he was dealing with health issues, including an ongoing battle against cancer, which they believed may have impacted his behavior. Lorrie Osborne-Hirko, who was stabbed in the kidney area and back, was taken to a hospital for treatment and was reported to be recovering from her physical and mental wounds.
The tragic events of that night left Hirko's family without words to adequately describe their emotions and feelings. They continued to process what had happened and sought to understand the reasons behind Hirko's actions.
