Steven Michael "Steve" Smith, a 54-year-old Caucasian male, was a dedicated officer with the Columbus Division of Police, serving for 27 years. He was affectionately known as "Mike" to his family and friends. On April 10, 2016, during a SWAT operation to serve a felony arson warrant, Officer Smith was shot by the suspect, Lincoln Rutledge, while riding in the turret of an armored vehicle.
Despite immediate medical attention, Officer Smith succumbed to his injuries two days later on April 12, 2016.
The suspect, Lincoln Rutledge, was taken into custody following the shooting. He was later charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault, aggravated arson, and multiple gun specifications. Rutledge's trial revealed that he had a history of erratic behavior and had previously set fire to his ex-wife's home. In 2017, Rutledge was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
