Joseph P. Remlinger, a 50-year-old Caucasian male from Columbus, Ohio, tragically died on June 2, 2016. He was a landlord who was shot by his tenant, Maurice E. Watkins, age 33, when Remlinger attempted to collect overdue rent. After shooting Remlinger, Watkins, along with Pierre C. Williams, age 26, set fire to the garage where Remlinger's body was placed in an attempt to cover up the crime.
The incident occurred at Watkins' residence on Grasmere Avenue, and Watkins was arrested a few
hours later, still in possession of the firearm used in the murder. Williams was arrested when he sought medical treatment for burns sustained while helping set the fire. Both men were indicted on multiple charges, including Aggravated Murder, Murder, Aggravated Arson, Arson, Tampering with Evidence, Gross Abuse of a Corpse, and Having a Weapon under Disability.
The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the lengths to which the suspects went to cover it up. The Franklin County Prosecutor's Office pursued substantial prison sentences for both Watkins and Williams. The tragic death of Joseph P. Remlinger highlighted the dangers landlords can face when dealing with tenants in arrears and the severe consequences of such confrontations.
