Phylicia Mitchell, a 46-year-old Black transgender woman, was fatally shot outside her Cleveland home on February 23, 2018. Mitchell's death marked at least the fifth reported homicide of a transgender person in the U.S. that year. She was remembered by her longtime partner, Shane Mitchell, as a warm and well-liked person who had struggled with homelessness and drug addiction. Despite these challenges, she had earned her GED and worked as a hairstylist.
