On June 20, 2018, 9-year-old Saniyah Nicholson, a young girl from Maple Heights, Cleveland, OH, tragically lost her life. She was sitting in a car with her older sister while their mother went into a boxing gym to retrieve their brother. During this time, a car full of people drove by and fired a gun at a group of individuals walking near Lee Road and Harvard Avenue.
The group returned gunfire, and a stray bullet hit Saniyah in the head, killing her instantly.
The incident led to multiple arrests and legal proceedings. Ce’Matizea Andrews, who prosecutors said fired the first shots, was sentenced to 22 years in prison in September 2020. Damaris Perry, Dyshawn Bonner, and Timothy Greene were charged with involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison in June 2022. Additionally, Aaron George and Brewen Harrison pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence charges in September 2019 and are awaiting sentencing. Devontae Nettles is awaiting a pre-trial hearing.
The case drew significant attention and outrage from the community, with Saniyah's family and friends calling for justice. The family's grief was palpable during the court proceedings, with Saniyah's mother expressing her heartbreak and the irreversible loss of her daughter. The judge's sentence included two years of mandatory post-release control for each of the defendants.
