Oscar Caywood, a 34-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on June 18, 2018, in Youngstown, OH. His body was discovered the following day inside a garage on Wilson Avenue, where he had sustained multiple stab and gunshot wounds. The brutality of the crime was evident as Caywood was found covered in deep gashes and still bleeding.
The investigation led to the arrest of two individuals, Earl Charity and Juan Phillips, who were found at the scene covered in
blood and in possession of Caywood's money and jewelry. Inside the garage, police also discovered 10 guns and several sharp instruments, including a meat cleaver, believed to have been used in the attack. Both Charity and Phillips were immediately detained by the officers on the scene.
Earl Charity, aged 32, eventually pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery in connection with Caywood's death. He was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison. During the court proceedings, Charity expressed remorse, stating that he never intended for Caywood to be harmed and that Caywood was a good friend. Phillips, aged 34, also pleaded guilty to reduced charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery, receiving a 12-year prison sentence.
The case highlighted the violent nature of the crime and the significant impact it had on Caywood's family and friends. The court proceedings and subsequent sentences brought some measure of justice for the tragic loss of Oscar Caywood.
