Taquan J. Sprinkle, a 24-year-old African American man from Flint, Michigan, tragically lost his life on October 15, 2018, in Columbus, Ohio. He was fatally shot during a confrontation that began on Interstate 70 and ended in the South Side neighborhood of Columbus. The incident was reportedly triggered by a road rage altercation between two vehicles.
Sprinkle was struck in the abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Following the shooting, the suspect, Mark Anthony Thomas, fled to Cleveland, Ohio. However, he was arrested by the U.S. Marshals on November 9, 2018, and was subsequently charged with murder. Thomas allegedly shot at Sprinkle's vehicle, causing it to crash into two parked cars before Sprinkle was transported to the hospital. The investigation revealed that Thomas had a history of criminal activity, and DNA evidence collected from the crashed vehicle linked him to the crime.
In March 2022, Mark Anthony Thomas Jr., now 31, entered a guilty plea to an involuntary manslaughter charge and was sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison. The court records indicated that Thomas fired multiple shots into Sprinkle's car during the confrontation, leading to the fatal crash. The plea deal resulted in the dismissal of additional charges against Thomas, including felonious assault and discharging a firearm over a roadway.
