Christopher Lee Campbell, a 42-year-old man from Dayton, OH, tragically died on May 26, 2019. He was shot and subsequently crashed his vehicle into a playground at the Dayton Boys Prep Academy. Campbell was found inside the crashed vehicle and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. when police responded to reports of shots fired and discovered Campbell's vehicle crashed into the playground.
The investigation revealed that Campbell had been shot near the intersection of North Antioch Street and West Second Street. The police arrested Carson D. Barker, 33, in connection with the incident. Barker was charged with felonious assault and weapon offenses, and homicide charges were later presented to the prosecutor’s office.
During Barker's trial, he claimed self-defense, stating that Campbell had pulled a gun on him and a shootout ensued. However, prosecutors argued that Barker ambushed Campbell and did not have reasonable grounds to believe he was in danger. Barker was convicted of two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises. He was sentenced to 29 to 33 years to life in prison.
The case highlighted the tragic consequences of a long-running dispute between Campbell and Barker, which ultimately led to Campbell's untimely death. The community and witnesses played a crucial role in the quick arrest of Barker, demonstrating the importance of cooperation in solving such cases.
