Dallas Lee Draughn, a 19-year-old male from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost his life on August 2, 2015. Draughn was shot multiple times outside an apartment building on Huffman Avenue. The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m., when a man was seen driving by the apartment buildings and firing a weapon. Draughn was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
Witnesses at the scene provided descriptions of the suspects, leading to the
arrest of Avelardo Rosales, 24, the following day in St. Louis County, Missouri. Rosales was identified as the shooter and was extradited to Ohio to face charges. Joel Arias Guia, 23, was also indicted for his involvement in the shooting. Both Rosales and Guia were charged with murder, felonious assault, and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation.
The investigation revealed that Draughn may have been involved in a dispute over money with Rosales prior to the shooting. The tragic incident also injured a 14-year-old boy who was inside his apartment at the time. The boy was grazed by a bullet but survived his injuries.
Rosales was found guilty of murder and other charges and was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison. Guia remained at large, with an arrest warrant issued for his capture. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence on communities and the importance of addressing disputes through non-violent means.
