Cierra Danae Morris, a 25-year-old African American woman from Youngstown, OH, tragically lost her life on February 29, 2020. She was fatally shot at her home on West Judson Street during what police described as a domestic dispute. Cierra's father, Leroy Morris, also died in the incident while trying to protect her. The perpetrator, John Bruner III, who was 30 years old and the father of Cierra's daughter, turned himself into the police a few hours after the shooting.
He was later indicted on two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of murder.
The incident began when Cierra was arguing with Bruner in the living room of her home. Her mother, Donna Morris, heard the argument and gunshots, and in an attempt to protect her granddaughter, she rushed into the living room and took the child to a bedroom, locking the door. Despite being shot more than 17 times, Cierra fought for her life and managed to crawl to a stairwell before paramedics arrived. Both Cierra and her father were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The case drew significant attention from the community and law enforcement. Bruner's girlfriend was also arrested and held on a complicity charge for driving him to and from the scene. In August 2020, Bruner pleaded guilty to the double homicide, avoiding the possibility of facing the death penalty. He was sentenced to 41 years to life in prison.
The Morris family has since been vocal about the senseless violence and the impact it has had on their lives. They have called for community support and justice for Cierra and Leroy. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of domestic violence leading to death in the Youngstown area.
Cierra Morris is remembered fondly by her family and friends, who described her as a loving mother and daughter who enjoyed spending time with her daughter and family. Her obituary noted her passion for fashion, makeup, and all things Jordyn. She is deeply missed by her mother, Donna, her daughter Jordyn, and her siblings.
