Elijah Rashad Bowen, a 24-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, tragically passed away on August 3, 2020. Elijah was known for his love of music, singing, and dancing, and his contagious smile and big hugs will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was born on January 19, 1996, in Defiance, Ohio, and is survived by his mother, Erin Booth; sister, JaeVonna Booth; grandparents, Deb & Tim Gerken and Jim & Nancy Bowen; great-grandmother, Kathryn Vergien; step-father, Victor Williams; and a host
of extended family and friends.
Elijah's death was the result of a violent confrontation that took place at an apartment building on North Ontario Street in Toledo. On the night of August 3, 2020, Toledo police were called to the scene where they found Elijah suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy determined that Elijah had been beaten and shot once in the abdomen.
Following the incident, Demonte Sturdevant, a 25-year-old man, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to Elijah's death. Sturdevant was indicted on two counts of murder and several other charges, including felonious assault, abduction, and aggravated riot. Five other individuals were also indicted in connection to the homicide, although they were not in custody at the time.
The investigation revealed that Elijah was held against his will during the confrontation, and it was during this time that Sturdevant shot him. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. The case has drawn significant attention, and the community continues to seek justice for Elijah's untimely death.
Elijah's family and friends remember him as a loving son, brother, grandson, and friend who genuinely enjoyed spending time with his loved ones. His memory lives on through the love and support of those who knew him.
