On December 20, 2023, 16-year-old Eric "EJ" Scott, a junior at Springfield High School in Toledo, Ohio, was fatally shot near the intersection of Amsterdam Road and Heathshire Drive in west Toledo. He sustained two gunshot wounds to the torso and was transported by private vehicle to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Lucas County Coroner's Office ruled his death a homicide.
Eric was a cornerback for the Springfield High School Blue Devils football team.
His coach, LaCharles Smith, described him as a leader who was well-respected by his teammates, school, and community. Springfield Local Schools Superintendent Matt Geha expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Eric's energetic and joyful spirit, as well as his passion for football.
Following an investigation, Toledo police arrested 18-year-old Grant Lynn and a 17-year-old suspect on February 21, 2024, charging them with murder in connection to Eric's death. A third suspect, 17-year-old Ashton Neal, had a murder warrant issued for his arrest and was not in custody at that time. Court documents revealed that Lynn drove Eric and two other friends into the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. Upon encountering an individual Eric reportedly disliked, Lynn parked the vehicle, and the three passengers exited and fired multiple rounds at the individual. During the incident, Eric was struck by gunfire, which detectives believe came from his friends. Lynn then moved the truck to pick up the group and drove Eric to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
On October 30, 2024, Lynn was sentenced to seven years in state prison after pleading no contest to reduced charges of involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault. The sentence included a mandatory three-year term for a firearms specification. During the sentencing, Eric's mother, Alisha Quinney, expressed that she did not consider her son a victim of Lynn's actions but rather a casualty of street violence. Lynn tearfully apologized to Eric's family, stating his deep regret and desire to undo the events of that day.
The cases against the two 17-year-old suspects, Terrance Robinson and Ashton Neal, were pending in Lucas County Juvenile Court as of November 2024, with proceedings to determine if they would be tried as adults. The tragic death of Eric Scott underscored the devastating impact of gun violence on the Toledo community and highlighted the ongoing efforts to seek justice for the young athlete.
