Joseph Johnson, a 16-year-old male from Toledo, Ohio, was fatally shot on the morning of March 4, 2025. The incident occurred in the 900 block of Woodward Avenue, where Johnson was engaged in a conversation with an individual who had pulled up in a vehicle. During this interaction, he was shot at least once in the chest. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found Johnson collapsed on a porch. He was transported to Mercy Health St.
Vincent Medical Center in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy conducted by the Lucas County Coroner's Office determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the back, ruling his death a homicide.
Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting, utilizing video surveillance and witness interviews to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Their findings indicated that the suspects had arrived at the location to complete a gun sale with Johnson. Following the shooting, a vehicle connected to the crime was stopped on Sylvania Avenue, leading to the detention of several individuals for questioning.
Four suspects were subsequently indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises. The individuals charged in connection with Johnson’s death were identified as Omarion Coleman, 22; Shamur Hughes, 22; Delveon Lear, 23; and Diamani Lear, 22. Additionally, Delveon Lear and Diamani Lear faced charges related to participation in a criminal gang, while Delveon Lear was further indicted for possessing weapons while under disability.
Johnson was a student at Woodward High School, and his untimely death has left a profound impact on his community. His family and friends mourn the loss of a young life cut short by violence, while local authorities continue their efforts to bring justice in the case.
