Martel Miller, a 22-year-old male from Lucas County, Toledo, OH, tragically passed away on December 21, 2015. He was found in the 700 block of Locust Street near Ontario Street, where neighbors reported hearing at least five gunshots during what police described as a shootout.
Toledo police identified Jonathon Shelton, 20, as a suspect in the shooting death of Martel Miller. Shelton was initially charged with murder and his bond was set at $1 million.
However, after an autopsy, it was determined that Shelton's bullets did not kill Miller. Shelton was then charged with felonious assault.
On February 15, 2016, Bryan Thomas Jr., 20, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to Miller's death. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
The case highlights the tragic loss of a young man who was the youngest of six children and the first in his family to graduate from high school. His mother, Darla Brown, tearfully described him as a loving father to a 3-year-old son and someone who loved his family and friends deeply.
The legal proceedings continued with Shelton entering Alford pleas to two counts of felonious assault, while Thomas faced charges of murder, felonious assault, discharge of a firearm over a public road, and participating in a criminal gang.
