Erek Evans, a 32-year-old man from Toledo, OH, was tragically shot and killed on November 9, 2022. He was found in the hallway of an apartment building in the 600 block of Locust Street, having been shot three times in the head. The Lucas County Coroner ruled his death a homicide.
Following the incident, Toledo police arrested Michael Belcher, 46, on suspicion of murder. Belcher was later charged with the crime and his bond was set at $1 million. He was scheduled to appear in Toledo Municipal Court on November 23, 2022. During the investigation, police did not release any information regarding a possible motive for the shooting.
In May 2023, Michael Belcher entered an Alford plea, meaning he did not admit to the killing but acknowledged that there was enough evidence for a conviction. He was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the murder of Erek Evans. Additionally, Belcher received a concurrent 30-month sentence for having a weapon while under disability.
