Martitus Holloway, a 42-year-old Black man, tragically lost his life on January 29, 2021, in Toledo, Ohio. Holloway was fatally shot in the afternoon on Macomber Street, and he was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, but unfortunately, he did not survive. The incident occurred around 1235 hours when Holloway was shot at least once.
JuJuan Childress, a 44-year-old Black man, was arrested at the scene and charged with Holloway's murder. According to court records, Childress admitted that he and Holloway were "fooling around with a gun," and it accidentally discharged, hitting Holloway in the torso. Initially, Childress pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, but later changed his plea to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and will spend one to three years on probation.
The Toledo Police Department conducted an investigation into the incident, and Childress was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court. He was held in custody on a $500,000 bond while awaiting his preliminary hearing. The case drew attention to issues of gun violence and the importance of responsible gun handling.
