Sergeant James Francis Boyle, aged 39, was a dedicated officer with the Toledo Police Department in Ohio. On the night of May 5, 1908, he and another officer were investigating three suspicious men near some railroad boxcars on Erie Street. As Sergeant Boyle approached the suspects, the other officer went around the block to prevent them from fleeing. The suspects walked away and were found in front of a nearby bakery.
