Sergeant James Francis Boyle, aged 39, was a dedicated officer with the Toledo Police Department in Ohio. On the night of May 5, 1908, he and another officer were investigating three suspicious men near some railroad boxcars on Erie Street. As Sergeant Boyle approached the suspects, the other officer went around the block to prevent them from fleeing. The suspects walked away and were found in front of a nearby bakery.
When Sergeant Boyle began questioning them, one of the men pulled out a revolver and opened fire, striking Sergeant Boyle. The other officer returned fire, hitting the shooter in the leg. Despite being rushed to St. Vincent Hospital, Sergeant Boyle succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The suspects were quickly apprehended after fleeing the scene. The shooter claimed the shooting was an accident, but he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was eventually paroled on February 16, 1912. The other two suspects had their charges dismissed.
Sergeant Boyle had served with the Toledo Police Department for 11 years and was survived by his wife, four children, mother, and three brothers. His death was a tragic loss for the community and the police department, and he is remembered for his dedication and sacrifice.
