Diontrae Fitzhugh, a 22-year-old man from Akron, OH, was fatally shot on June 18, 2021, during a gathering at Mount Peace Cemetery. The incident occurred after several shots were fired, and Diontrae succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. The gathering was a memorial for a teen who died in 2018, and the scene was chaotic with multiple vehicles fleeing and people running away after the shots were fired.
Akron police responded to the scene and found Diontrae during a canvass of the area.
He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he was pronounced dead. A suspect was taken into custody after a foot chase, and a handgun was recovered in the vehicle’s flight path. However, the driver and other occupants of the vehicle managed to elude police. Investigators recovered numerous shell casings and other evidence at the scene, and the investigation was ongoing.
The Akron Police Department reported that the fatal shooting was the 25th homicide in the city that year, with the majority of these cases involving guns. Detectives were working to determine the role of the apprehended individual in the incident and to identify additional suspects involved. The investigation was still in its early stages, and no further details were immediately available.
In connection with the shooting, a 16-year-old suspect was arrested while fleeing the scene. He was later charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault in connection to the death of another teen, Davieon Frazier, who was killed in an earlier incident in April. The suspect was being held in detention, and prosecutors were seeking to try him as an adult.
The Akron Police Department continued to seek information from residents about the shooting and encouraged anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remained active, with the goal of bringing those responsible for Diontrae's death to justice.
