Maurice Porter, a 39-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, tragically lost his life on July 22, 2021. He was fatally shot in the back of the head in the yard of an abandoned property on South Central Avenue in Franklinton. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m., and when the police arrived, they found Porter suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, Porter was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, the Columbus Police Department launched an investigation
to determine the circumstances surrounding Porter's death. The investigation led to the arrest of Teona Brooks, a 22-year-old woman from Columbus. Brooks was charged with one count of aggravated murder and two counts of murder. She was accused of shooting Porter after allegedly seeing him point a gun at friends she was walking with and pulling the trigger. Brooks fled Ohio after the shooting but was later arrested in Chicago in November 2021.
In October 2023, Brooks pleaded guilty to one count of murder in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Judge Michael J. Holbrook sentenced her to life in prison with the possibility of parole after at least 15 years. The defense argued that Brooks wanted to take accountability for her actions and that the plea allowed Porter's family to begin taking their first steps toward closure.
The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Columbus and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such incidents. The community continues to mourn the loss of Maurice Porter and seek justice for his untimely death.
