Christopher Cooper-Patton, an 18-year-old Black male from Columbus, Ohio, was shot late on the night of March 31, 2026, in the 1600 block of Elaine Road on the city’s east side. Columbus police said officers were called there at about 10:40 p.m. on a report of a shooting, and when they arrived, they found Christopher suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was still alive, but his injuries were severe enough that he was rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition.
The case quickly became more than a shooting investigation. Police described the injuries as catastrophic, and homicide detectives became involved while Christopher remained hospitalized. For several days, his family and those who knew him were left in the painful space between hope and grief. Public fundraising information described him as a talented basketball player with a bright future, a beloved son, and a cherished part of the Cooper and Patton families. The fundraiser also said that even after the tragedy, Christopher continued to help others through organ donation.
Columbus police later reported that Christopher was pronounced dead on April 4, 2026, at 4:36 p.m. Although some memorial listings mark March 31, 2026, as the date he was lost to gun violence, the official police update and local news reports indicate that March 31 was the night he was shot and April 4 was when he died. After his death, the investigation was classified as a homicide.
As of the available public reports, police had not released the name of any suspect, announced any arrests, or identified a motive. The suspect fields in the Columbus Division of Police media release were blank, and the department stated that the motive remained unclear. Local reporting likewise said information about suspects or motives was not immediately available.
Detective Radich was listed as the lead detective, assisted by Detective Niederkohr. Columbus police asked anyone with information to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, suggesting investigators were still trying to piece together what led to the shooting on Elaine Road and who was responsible for taking Christopher’s life.
