Atayia Nichols, a 24-year-old woman from Columbus, OH, tragically lost her life on June 15, 2022. Nichols was fatally shot at the Glenwood Community Center, where she had gone to seek relief from the heat. The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m., and despite being rushed to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Nichols succumbed to her injuries at 5:54 p.m.
The shooting was part of a larger pattern of violence in Columbus parks, marking the fifth such incident since April 23, 2022.
Witnesses reported that there was a fight prior to the shooting, and police believe there may have been more than one shooter involved. Nichols was not involved in the altercation but was trying to protect her half-sister who was.
In connection with Nichols' death, 15-year-old Avent’tay Soloman was arrested on suspicion of murder. Soloman, who was also injured in the shooting, was found blocks away from the scene and taken into custody. He was charged with the murder of Nichols and felonious assault of another victim. Soloman's case is still under investigation, and he has entered a plea equivalent to "not guilty" in juvenile court.
The community has mourned the loss of Nichols, remembering her as a loving mother, daughter, and friend. A candlelight vigil was held in her honor, and community members have called for action to address the ongoing violence in the area.
The investigation into Nichols' death continues, with police working to determine if additional charges will be filed against Soloman or other individuals involved in the shooting.
