William Hinson, a 46-year-old Black man, tragically lost his life on June 30, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred in the Linden area, specifically in the 1000 block of East Hudson Street. Hinson was driving away from an altercation outside the Northland Food Mart when shots were fired at his vehicle. The impact of the gunfire caused Hinson to lose control and crash into a utility pole.
Despite immediate medical attention, Hinson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Columbus Police launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Hinson's death. On July 5, 2022, two suspects, 23-year-old Shandale Brown and 20-year-old Ayub Issack, were arrested and charged with murder in connection with Hinson's death. Detectives revealed that the altercation began in the parking lot of the Northland Food Mart, and as Hinson attempted to drive away, Issack fired multiple rounds into the vehicle.
The case drew significant attention as it marked the 63rd homicide in Columbus for the year 2022. The investigation continued as authorities worked to gather evidence and build a strong case against the suspects. In the months following the arrests, both Brown and Issack faced legal proceedings, with Issack eventually pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other charges. He was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison. Brown, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and received five years of probation.
The tragic death of William Hinson and the subsequent legal actions against the suspects highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the Columbus community in addressing violent crime. The case also underscored the importance of community cooperation and law enforcement efforts in seeking justice for victims and their families.
