Lelia King, a 30-year-old woman from Columbus, OH, tragically lost her life on July 16, 2022. She was caught in the crossfire of a shooting incident that took place in the parking lot of a convenience store on East Broad Street near James Road. King was in her car, waiting to pick up snacks for a movie night with her five-year-old daughter when she was struck by an errant bullet.
Despite the efforts of a good Samaritan and emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at Mount Carmel East Hospital later that night.
The Columbus Division of Police launched an investigation into the incident and identified a 16-year-old suspect, Kyrim Curenton, who was charged with reckless homicide and weapons under disability. Police also released surveillance photos of three other persons of interest in connection with the shooting. In April 2023, it was decided that Curenton would be tried as an adult. He eventually pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to seven to nine years in prison.
The community remembered King as an incredible mother and a generous friend. Her best friend, Melissa Duross, described her as a humble spirit and the best mother anyone could ask for. King's daughter, now in the care of her aunt, continues to ask questions about her mother's untimely death. The family has expressed their grief and hope for closure, urging anyone with information to come forward.
