On November 9, 2023, 63-year-old Marvita Annette McCaskill was fatally shot in the Driving Park neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. in the 800 block of Berkeley Road, where officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert found McCaskill suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m.
Following the incident, 18-year-old Denzell Reed was arrested and charged with McCaskill's murder.
In November 2024, Reed pleaded guilty to the charge and is awaiting sentencing.
Born on September 20, 1960, McCaskill was affectionately known as "Nana" to her family and "Shorty" to her close friends. She was an active member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship and was working towards opening a restaurant or food truck to share her culinary talents. She is survived by her children, Kimberly Roberson and Craig Little, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The tragic loss of McCaskill has deeply affected her family and the Columbus community, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence. Her family established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and to honor her memory.
