On August 21, 2022, 19-year-old Skyler Miller from Toronto, OH, tragically died after being shot in the head at a house party. The incident occurred at a home on West Fernwood Avenue, where a party was taking place. According to Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin, the shooting was the result of a game of Russian roulette played with a loaded revolver while the participants were drinking.
The juvenile responsible for the shooting has been charged with reckless homicide with a firearm specification.
In addition to the juvenile charged with reckless homicide, 18-year-old Matthew Lumpkin has been charged with tampering with evidence for allegedly removing the weapon from the scene. Hanlin mentioned that there was no evidence of an argument or fight between the juvenile and Miller prior to the shooting. The investigation revealed that it took over 20 minutes before a 911 call was made, and Miller was pronounced dead after being transported to Trinity Medical Center West.
The absence of adults at the party was noted as a concerning element of the incident. Hanlin emphasized the responsibility of parents to be aware of what is happening in their homes and to ensure the safety of their children. The case is still pending in the juvenile justice system, and further charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
