On December 17, 2022, Suleeman Osman Abdi, a 25-year-old male of Somali descent, was tragically killed in a shooting incident in Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred in the 800 block of Wedgewood Drive in the Hilltop area. According to police reports, Abdi was involved in an argument with an unidentified male inside an apartment. During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Abdi, fatally injuring him.
The suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Following the incident, the Columbus Division of Police launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect. On January 10, 2023, Mahat Salat, a 21-year-old male, was charged with the murder of Suleeman Abdi. Salat was arrested and is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment. The investigation revealed that this was the 135th homicide in Columbus for the year 2022.
The Wedgewood Village Apartments, where the shooting took place, have unfortunately been the site of numerous violent incidents over the years. Since 2017, there have been 17 homicides in or around the apartment complex, with most victims being 25 years old or younger.
The community and Abdi's loved ones have expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and build their case against the suspect.
