Amos Wellington Howell, a 21-year-old male deputy sheriff with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina, tragically died on November 6, 1902. Howell succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained two weeks earlier while attempting to arrest a man for the murder of his father. The incident occurred along the North Fork, where the suspect opened fire on Howell. Despite being critically wounded, Howell managed to shoot and kill the suspect.
