Amos Wellington Howell, a 21-year-old male deputy sheriff with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina, tragically died on November 6, 1902. Howell succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained two weeks earlier while attempting to arrest a man for the murder of his father. The incident occurred along the North Fork, where the suspect opened fire on Howell.
Despite being critically wounded, Howell managed to shoot and kill the suspect.
Following the shooting, the suspect's cousin, who was present at the scene, was taken into custody. The shooter fled to Wyoming but was eventually apprehended in August 1903 and extradited back to North Carolina. However, he managed to escape from the Caldwell County Jail a few weeks later and fled into the nearby mountains. On April 22, 1904, the shooter was shot and killed by a Watauga County sheriff's deputy.
Howell's death was a significant event in Watauga County, and his sacrifice is remembered by the law enforcement community. His dedication to duty and the ultimate price he paid highlight the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
