On the night of May 26, 2021, Sheikevious Young, a 21-year-old Black female, was driving home from her job as a security guard. As she traveled along Interstate 285 northbound near the Church Street exit in DeKalb County, Georgia, her silver 2019 Nissan Versa was struck by multiple bullets. The gunfire shattered a window of her vehicle and left her with critical injuries.
The incident occurred just before midnight.
First responders rushed Young to a local hospital where she fought for her life for several days. Tragically, on June 1, 2021, she succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the shooting. At the time of her death, Young was working two full-time jobs, at a daycare and as a security guard, and had plans to return to school. She was described by her father as a hardworking and independent young woman.
The DeKalb County Police Department launched a homicide investigation into her death. Investigators have considered that the shooting may have been the result of a road rage incident, a growing concern on metro-Atlanta interstates at the time. Despite appeals to the public for information, no suspect has been identified and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek any information that could lead to the person or persons responsible for Sheikevious Young's death.
