Shabazz Arness Woods Jr., an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on January 24, 2013, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Shabazz was found dead in a yard on Seymour Drive, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. His death was ruled a homicide, and the Goldsboro Police Department launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

In September 2019, Brittany Megan Sasser, a 28-year-old teacher with Wayne County Public Schools, was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Sasser, who had been an exceptional children's teacher at Rosewood High School since August 2016, was suspended with pay following her arrest. She was held in the Wayne County jail on a $75,000 bond. The Goldsboro Police Department indicated that additional arrests were expected in connection with the case.
Shabazz's death left a profound impact on his family and the Goldsboro community. Funeral services were held at Bethel Church, with the Rev. Earl Dancy officiating. Shabazz was laid to rest in the Willow Dale Cemetery. He was survived by his parents, Tara Phillips and Sebastian Woods, as well as his siblings and extended family members. The investigation into his murder remains a poignant reminder of the ongoing quest for justice and the enduring pain felt by those who loved him.
