Police Officer Robert Louis Smith, aged 27, was shot and killed on January 15, 1987, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Officer Smith was off-duty when he responded to a report of a man firing a gun into a condo complex. During the search for the suspect, Officer Smith located him and shined his flashlight on him.
