Police Officer Robert Louis Smith, aged 27, was shot and killed on January 15, 1987, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Officer Smith was off-duty when he responded to a report of a man firing a gun into a condo complex. During the search for the suspect, Officer Smith located him and shined his flashlight on him. In response, the suspect opened fire with a rifle, striking Officer Smith four times. Other officers arrived at the scene and returned fire, wounding the suspect. The suspect, a 32-year-old ...
