Stephen Levi Amos II, a 24-year-old male police officer of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on February 27, 1995, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Officer Amos and his partner, Senior Police Officer John Pratt, were responding to a call of shots fired in a nearby apartment complex when they encountered sniper fire. As Officer Amos exited their patrol car to take cover, he was struck by a round fired by the sniper.
Despite efforts to move him out of the line of fire and transport him to a local hospital, Officer Amos succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The suspect responsible for Officer Amos's death was sentenced to death and was scheduled to be executed on February 27, 2004. However, a U.S. District Court Judge issued an indefinite stay of execution, and the suspect ultimately died in prison on December 5, 2008.
Officer Amos is remembered and honored by his family, friends, and the community. In September 2018, a bridge on U.S. 158 over North Beltway Drive was renamed the Officer Stephen Levi Amos II Bridge in his memory.
