Kalil Drakko Nathaniel Rice, a 19-year-old male from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was found dead on July 13, 2020, in an abandoned SUV on Gray Avenue. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. According to police reports, Rice's death occurred during a game of Russian roulette, a dangerous activity involving a firearm. Witnesses stated that the injury was self-inflicted after a member of the group suggested playing the game.
The investigation revealed that five individuals
were present in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Among them were Keivaunaugh Cearon Sanders, 19, and James Michael King Jr., 18, both from Winston-Salem. Sanders was arrested and charged with concealment of death and possession of a firearm by a felon. King Jr. faced charges of interference with an electronic monitoring device, breaking and entering, and larceny, some of which were related to the theft of the Kia Sorento in which Rice was found.
The police also discovered that two juveniles were in the SUV during the shooting. However, their identities were not disclosed due to their age. The firearm used in the incident was a semi-automatic handgun, which, unlike a revolver typically used in Russian roulette, would always result in injury or death to the participant. Authorities are working closely with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if the fatal injury is consistent with being self-inflicted.
