On January 12, 2008, two-year-old Jamir Whitaker, an African American toddler, was tragically killed in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when shots were fired into his home on 2805 Pelham Road. Jamir was struck by a stray bullet and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His father was also shot twice but survived the attack.
The motive behind the shooting was believed to be robbery, as authorities found 17 pounds of marijuana, approximately $3,500 in cash, and other drug paraphernalia inside the house.
Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved. Witnesses reported seeing a person run to a dark green or blue late-model Ford Taurus with tinted windows shortly after the shots were fired. The police have been seeking leads and offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information that could lead to an arrest. The community and law enforcement continue to search for justice for Jamir Whitaker and his family.
