Anjelo Kinard, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on December 13, 2008, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The events leading to his death were both shocking and heartbreaking. On that fateful evening, Anjelo was at home with his family when a violent altercation erupted. The perpetrator, Scott Edwin Davis, who was living with the family at the time, was involved in a heated discussion about moving out due to recent events, including his job loss.
This discussion escalated, leading Davis to retrieve a gun from the bedroom he shared with Gabrielle Kinard, Anjelo's mother.
In a horrifying turn of events, Davis began firing the weapon, striking Anjelo inside the home. Anjelo was found face down on the living room floor, non-responsive but still breathing. He was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Gabrielle Kinard, a 38-year-old African American female, was also shot twice and found face down in the front yard near a van parked in the driveway. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Gabrielle's daughter, Gabriella Kinard, 15, was also shot but managed to escape and seek help from a neighbor.
Scott Edwin Davis, 50, was arrested at the scene and later admitted to the shootings. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Anjelo and Gabrielle Kinard, and one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Gabriella Kinard. In June 2012, Davis pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, followed by an additional 157-198 months in prison. This plea deal was reached after consulting with the Kinard family, who opposed the death penalty and wanted Davis to spend the rest of his life in prison reflecting on his crimes.
The tragic deaths of Anjelo and Gabrielle Kinard left a lasting impact on their community. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing mental health and job-related stress.
