Jeff Shelton, a 35-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on March 31, 2007, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Officer Shelton, along with his colleague Officer Sean Clark, responded to a disturbance call at an East Charlotte housing complex on Barrington Drive. After resolving the disturbance, they engaged in a conversation with a man unrelated to the initial call. As they turned to walk away, the man produced a gun and shot both officers in the back.
Both officers were transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The suspect, who had five prior convictions for resisting arrest and assaulting a government official, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. On September 30, 2010, he was convicted of both counts and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
Officer Shelton had served with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for six years and was assigned to the North Tryon Division. He was known for his dedication to his job and his willingness to help others. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Sparks Shelton.
