Juan Manuel Martinez, a 26-year-old male, tragically lost his life on November 1, 2009, in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The other victims included his brothers, Victor Alfonso Martinez and Javier Manuel Martinez , as well as Marcos Alvedo Aguilar .
The suspect in the case, Marcos Gonzalez, 29, was arrested early the following morning at a Super 8 motel in
Martinsville, Virginia, about 50 miles northeast of Mount Airy. Gonzalez was known to the victims and was believed to have carried out the shooting in retaliation over a female. He was taken into custody without incident and later waived extradition to face charges in Surry County.
The shooting occurred at the Woods TV store on Worth Street in downtown Mount Airy, where 16 shots were fired from a high-powered assault rifle. Two victims died at the scene, while the other two succumbed to their injuries at Northern Surry County Hospital. The investigation revealed that Gonzalez had been released from prison two years prior after serving more than four years for a 2002 conviction for kidnapping a minor.
The case generated an intense manhunt across Surry County, with authorities stopping a vehicle matching the description of Gonzalez's car and detaining two men, who were later released after being cleared of involvement. The investigation continued, with police following up on numerous leads and considering the possibility of additional suspects.
