Marcos Alvido Oviedo Aguilar, a 21-year-old male, tragically lost his life on November 1, 2009, in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a mass shooting, which is considered one of the largest in the city's history. Marcos, along with three other victims, was shot at the Woods TV store on Worth Street in downtown Mount Airy. The other victims were Victor Alfonso Martinez, 22, Javier Manuel Martinez, 21, and Juan Manuel Martinez, 26.
The investigation revealed that the
suspect, Marcos Gonzalez, 29, knew the victims. The shooting was believed to be in retaliation over a female. Gonzalez was arrested early Monday morning at a Super 8 motel in Martinsville, Virginia, about 50 miles northeast of Mount Airy. He was taken into custody without incident and later waived extradition to Surry County.
The police were called to the scene at around 2:30 p.m. on the day of the shooting. Two of the men died at the scene, while the other two, including Marcos Alvido Oviedo Aguilar, succumbed to their injuries at Northern Surry County Hospital. The investigation is ongoing, and other suspects could be developed as more information comes to light.
Marcos Gonzalez had a criminal history, having been released from prison two years prior after serving more than four years for a 2002 conviction for kidnapping a minor. The shooting incident led to an intense manhunt across Surry County, with authorities receiving information about Gonzalez's whereabouts around 2:30 a.m. on the day of his arrest.
