Shakeem Devonte Avent, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 13, 2011, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. On that fateful evening, Avent was driving a burgundy Cadillac when he was shot while approaching the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Lee Street. The gunshot caused him to lose control of his vehicle, leading to a collision with a white BMW and subsequently crashing into a brick wall. Despite the efforts of multiple individuals who tried to help him at the scene, Avent was pronounced dead upon the arrival of the Rocky Mount Police Department.

The initial investigation revealed that Shakeem Devonte Avent had been shot in the chest, and the medical examiner confirmed that the gunshot wound was the cause of his death. The police received calls about gunshots in the area around the same time as the wreck, leading them to treat the case as a homicide. The driver of the BMW involved in the collision was not injured.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Rocky Mount Police Department sought to question two men, Antonio Vantron Richardson, 20, and James Raimey Jr., 21, in connection with the case. Richardson was also wanted on an unrelated outstanding warrant for marijuana possession. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. Team Cold Case, a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving unsolved homicides, has offered a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect responsible for Shakeem Devonte Avent's death.

The tragic death of Shakeem Devonte Avent has left a lasting impact on the Rocky Mount community, and his case continues to be a subject of investigation and public interest.
