LaVontae Khalil Brown, a 15-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 6, 2015, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. LaVontae was a freshman at Rocky Mount High School. On that fateful Friday afternoon, he was found severely injured from a gunshot wound at around 1 p.m. on Pinehaven Drive. Despite being rushed to Nash General Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into LaVontae's death led to the arrest of two suspects: Te'von Lamont Mabry, 18, and
Michael Antoine Lyons Jr., 19. Both individuals were charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Additionally, Mabry faced charges for possession of a firearm by a felon. The suspects were held without bond in the Nash County jail.
The Rocky Mount Police Department continued to investigate the case, urging anyone with information to come forward. Grief counselors were made available at Rocky Mount High School to support students and staff affected by the tragedy.
